What is the policy for transporting large items on the school bus?
The driver may refuse to carry large items that obstruct aisles or doors or that are deemed to be a danger to other passengers in any way, shape or form. Larger items may be carried on the bus if they can be stored under the seat, do not block the aisles or emergency exits; and are stored, lodged or secured in such a manner so that they cannot be dislodged in the event of an emergency. Skates may be taken on the bus only if the blades are covered by guards and they do not interfere with access to aisles or emergency exits.
When is the decision made to cancel school or bus transportation?
The decision to close schools and/or cancel transportation services will be made by 6:00 a.m.
What happens if the weather deteriorates during the school day?
Normally busses will not run early if inclement weather conditions develop during the school day. Students will remain at the school until the end of the day unless picked up by their parents. If a decision is made to run busses early the principal or designate will notify parents of all specifics regarding early bus delivery of students. The Transportation Coordinator will contact affected operators to begin their routes early, as well as up-date the divisions web site regarding the busing status. The school will remain open to students whose parents cannot be contacted, until such time as alternate housing arrangements can be made.
What indicators are used when considering non-operation of busses or closure of schools?
Any of the following factors, or combination of factors, shall serve as guidelines for considering non operation or early operation of buses and or closure of schools.
- Temperature of -40 degrees or lower reported by the weather office for the area in question.
- Visibility is less than 30 meters
- Road closures by the R.C.M.P. municipal or other local road officials.
Can I keep my children home if weather or road conditions seem severe?
Parents are not required to send their children to school if, in their judgment, weather conditions are detrimental to the safety or well-being of their children.
What happens if the bus breaks down?
STAR Catholic works in partnership with several bussing companies and school divisions to transport its students. These partnerships are with professional operators who have careful maintenance for their buses; however, there may be occasions when a bus breaks down. In the event that a bus breaks down, an alternative bus will be made available to transport your children to and from school. Drivers will remain with the students at all times until another bus or safe alternative has been arranged and arrives. Please ensure that your children are appropriately dressed for the weather in the event of a bus break down as it may be some time before alternative transportation arrangements can be made. The contractors will inform central office and the schools regarding a bus break down and appropriate measurers will be taken to inform all parents of the possible delay.
Will the bus wait for my children if they are running late?
A bus driver cannot wait for students at their stop as they have to be at transfer points and schools on time. If students are not at the stop, the driver will assume that the student is not attending school that day or the parent is taking the student to school.
What should students do if the bus does not pick them up?
Parents should ensure that their children have a plan in the event that the bus does not arrive to pick them up. Children must be aware of how long to wait at their stop before returning home or going to their alternate location.
